City Park administration votes on new agreement with Grow Dat Youth Farm

The City Park Improvement Association, the City Park’s governing body, is expected to vote on a resolution to approve a new cooperative agreement that could allow the popular Grow Dat Youth Farm youth agriculture program to remain in the park.

Park officials and Grow Dat staff did not provide a copy of the draft agreement or details of its contents, but a vote to approve the agreement is on the agenda for the CPIA’s monthly board meeting on Tuesday (Aug. 20).

The vote comes after months of community protests against a proposed road that would run through Grow Dat. City Park Conversancy, the nonprofit that manages the park’s day-to-day operations, pushed for the road as part of a long-term redevelopment plan for the park. After New Orleans residents began lobbying to save the farm, even disrupting a public meeting to get feedback on the master plan, City Park leadership announced it would not renew its lease.

But after continued opposition from Grow Dat supporters, City Park began meeting with Grow Dat to discuss how the farm and youth program could remain in the park. Now, City Park is close to entering into a new agreement with the youth program to keep it in the park.

The park’s master planning process is still underway, but most concrete plans for the redesign are not yet finalized. In April, park officials announced that the process, originally scheduled to be completed in December, would be extended to June 2025. Park officials said they had not received enough feedback from the community about what they hoped the plan would achieve.
