City police contain emergency situation near Montauk train station

Update, August 23, 4:55 p.m.: In an official press release Friday afternoon, East Hampton Town Police described the emergency as a case of an “emotionally disturbed individual” who was eventually taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for evaluation.

The first call came at 11:43 a.m. from the Suffolk County DASH agency, which responds to mental health emergencies. City police, as well as officers from the town of Southampton and state police, responded to a home on Edgemere Road. Officers were able to determine there were “numerous weapons” inside the home, but the person was unresponsive to family members or officers for “several hours,” police said.

“Eventually, the individual made contact with family members and responded to police instructions. The situation ended peacefully without anyone involved being injured,” city police said.

At 4:06 p.m., the Long Island Rail Road announced that full service on the Montauk line had resumed, but informed passengers that delays of 25 to 35 minutes would continue.

Update, August 23, 4:15 p.m.: East Hampton Town Police responded to a public safety emergency in Montauk near Edgemere Road and the train station. Streets were closed to establish a large security perimeter and trains to Montauk were stopped, but police said that as of 3:55 p.m., “the scene was clear and streets were open.”

Police did not provide any further details about the incident.

Originally, August 23, 3 p.m.: East Hampton Town Police are responding to a public safety emergency in Montauk near Edgemere Road and the train station.

At 2:55 p.m., the police department posted on Facebook, without giving specific details: “The situation is under control. The road closures in the area are a precautionary measure and have created a large safety perimeter. Please plan alternate routes and follow traffic laws until further notice.”

The Long Island Rail Road announced that it had halted trains on its Montauk route due to police activity near the Montauk station. At 2:33 p.m., the railroad company posted on social media platform X that one eastbound train was being held in Amagansett, one in Southampton and another in Jamaica before departing.
