Citywide bowhunting in Rhinelander to take place this fall

RHINELANDER, Wis. (WSAW) – The City of Rhinelander is renewing bow hunting for deer within city limits for the 2024-25 season.

The bow and arrow hunting season begins September 14 and runs through January 5. This year, bow and arrow hunting has been approved to continue during the nine-day rifle hunting season, the muzzleloader hunting season and the antlerless hunting season, as long as hunters wear bright orange clothing during that time.

The only time bowhunting is suspended is Halloween on October 31st.

The mayor and the police chief can suspend the hunt in emergency situations. In this case, the hunters will be notified by telephone.

Persons interested in bowhunting in the City may pick up the Hunter/Landowner Application at the City Clerk’s Office at 135 S. Stevens Street, Monday – Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or through the City’s website.

Applications are being made for both hunters and municipal landowners who wish to allow hunting on their property. All hunters must hunt from a raised hide at least 1.80 m above the ground. The application deadline is September 13th at 12:00 noon.

Bowhunters must have a valid Wisconsin State bow license and bring their carcass tag when registering for the program. Hunters and hunting properties approved in previous years will not automatically be re-registered and interested parties must complete a new application for this year’s hunting season.

Hunters must agree to a short waiting period after applying so that the Rhinelander Police Department can conduct a criminal background check. Once approved, hunters are enrolled in the program.

The State of Wisconsin has issued permits to the City of Rhinelander to hunt antlerless deer. Therefore, permits issued by the City are only valid for antlerless deer. Antlered deer may only be hunted and killed if the hunter has his or her own hunting tag issued by the WIDNR.
