NYACK – Three women suffered non-fatal gunshot wounds in the parking lot outside a Route 59 restaurant early Saturday morning, including one woman who was hospitalized with an abdominal injury, Clarkstown police said.

Police are investigating the shooting that occurred before 3 a.m. outside CY’s Restaurant and Lounge. The business is located on Route 59 37, outside the village in the Clarkstown neighborhood.

Police said the Clarkstown shootings were not random

When officers arrived at the mall around 3:05 a.m., they found a woman lying on the ground outside the restaurant with gunshot wounds to her leg and stomach, Clarkstown Detective Norman Peters said in a news release. Paramedics rendered aid before taking her to nearby Montefiore Nyack Hospital.

Two other women with leg injuries drove themselves to the hospital, Peters said. The medical assessment showed that “the injuries are serious but not currently life-threatening,” he said.

The restaurant provided surveillance video to police. The preliminary investigation described the shooter as a man with dreadlocks and a black mask, Peters said.

While the motive for the shooting is under investigation, Peters said the shootings do not appear to have been random. It is not believed the public is in immediate danger, he said.

One of the owners of Cy’s, Maxwell Occena, said the restaurant was the venue for a party with 25 to 30 guests. The party ended after 2 a.m. and people left the restaurant while he and his staff cleaned up.

“Unfortunately, the incident occurred around 2:45, 3 a.m. in the parking lot,” Occena said.

After the shooting, they called police, according to Occena. He said he saw a young woman lying on the ground, presumably bleeding from her left leg, and they tried to help her until police and the Nyack Ambulance Corps team arrived.

“We examined her and I could not see any other wounds,” Occena said. “She was lucid. Otherwise she seemed OK.”

He said he did not see the other two women who were shot. Peters said those women drove themselves to the hospital before police and an ambulance arrived.

“We have provided the police and investigators with our surveillance footage and all our knowledge,” Occena said.

Occena said the Jamaican-Haitian restaurant is a legacy to his younger brother, who died two years ago at age 19. The young man played football at St. Joe’s and was on his way to college.

“We are a hard-working family,” Occena said. “Something terrible happened in front of our house. Still, I’m glad no one was seriously injured.”
