There is probably no player or team in the NFL that is in a worse position in Week 2 than quarterback Deshaun Watson and the Cleveland Browns. Watson is facing a new lawsuit for sexual assault and battery. A statement from Watson’s lawyer denies the allegations. Because this is a civil and not a criminal case, the NFL has not placed Watson on the exempt list. He is expected to play on Sunday against the Jaguars.
Even with Watson, the Browns will be three-point underdogs as they try to rebound from a Week 1 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, who are fresh off a loss of their own.
The Browns’ offense was a mess in Week 1, as injuries on the offensive line and the continued absence of running back Nick Chubb brought the running game to a halt. Meanwhile, Watson’s continued ineffectiveness as a passer raised the question of when we would finally see backup Jameis Winston play.
Watson faces a Jacksonville defense that ranked in the bottom 10 in yards allowed in 2023 and allowed 400 yards in an overtime loss to Miami in Week 1. With tackle Jack Conklin and Jedrick Willis Jr. out for the Browns, this could again lead to more issues on defense and offense.
The Jaguars have their own offensive issues after a disappointing performance in Week 1. It won’t get much easier with Myles Garrett and a Browns defense threatening. Cleveland was No. 1 in the NFL in yards against the rest last season.
The Browns had a road record of just 2-6-1 against the spread last season, including 1-3-1 as a road underdog.
The Jaguars, on the other hand, finished just 3-5 against the spread at home, one of the worst records in the league.
