Clothing chain looks for potential new locations in Harrisburg area after store closures

A men’s clothing chain wants to stay in the Harrisburg area.

A DXL Big + Tall representative told PennLive in an email Thursday that the retailer is keen to stay in the area and is actively looking for potential new locations.

This came after DXL closed its store at the Harrisburg Mall in Swatara Township in June.

DXL was the last clothing store in the mall.

DXL has 16 stores in Pennsylvania. The closest location to the Harrisburg area is in Lancaster County.

Only three tenants remain at the Harrisburg Mall on Paxton Street – Applebee’s, Bass Pro Shops and Second & Charles.

St. John Properties is demolishing most of the Harrisburg Mall. St. John Properties is developing the site into a mixed-use development that will be called the Swatara Exchange. Applebee’s and Bass Pro Shops will be part of this project, according to St. John Properties.

St. John Properties proposes to divide the property into seven parcels:

  • A small supermarket with an area of 557 m² is to be built on the planned site no. 1 on the corner of Paxton Street and Mall Road.
  • A 3,195-square-foot restaurant will be built on the proposed Lot No. 2 between the supermarket and Applebee’s and along Paxton Street.
  • The existing 650 m² Applebee’s restaurant will be built on the planned site No. 3 on Paxton Street.
  • The proposed Lot No. 4 will include Retail Store “H” – a 8,000 square foot building along Paxton Street.
  • Proposed Lot #5 includes Retail “A1” – a 9,465 square foot building with a drive-in window; Retail “A2” – a 9,465 square foot building; Retail “G” – a 10,725 square foot building with a drive-in window; Retail “F” – a 10,725 square foot building with a drive-in window – all located in the center of the lot. Proposed Lot #5 also includes Building “B” – a 48,120 square foot facility near Harrisburg Street; Building “D” – a 56,160 square foot facility near Harrisburg Street; Building “C” – a 44,160 square foot facility in the center of the lot and Building “E” – a 47,160 square foot facility in the center of the lot; and Single Story Office “I” – a 13,600 square foot facility along Mall Street.
  • The proposed Lot 6 will include two stormwater management facilities.
  • The proposed Lot #7 includes the existing Bass Pro store.

It is expected that 2,216 parking spaces will be created on the site.

The former Toys “R” Us building was already separated from the shopping center site.

Construction of the Swatara Exchange will begin in 2025.

The mall opened in 1969 and has been home to several major department stores over the years: Macy’s, Hecht’s, Hess’s, Lord & Taylor, JCPenney, Gimbels, Wanamaker’s and Boscov’s.
