Coastal flooding expected in northern Nassau County: NWS

Coastal flooding expected in northern Nassau County: NWS

NASSAU COUNTY, NY — A coastal flood warning is in effect until 2 p.m. Thursday, after which the warning level will be raised to a caution for northern Nassau County for Friday morning through Friday afternoon, the National Weather Service said.

It may rain, but it doesn’t have to.

“A new storm is taking shape off the Mid-Atlantic coast and southern New England coast and will bring rain to parts of the Northeast, with the risk of localized flooding through Friday,” said Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather’s senior meteorologist. “However, where rain from the coastal storm doesn’t arrive, many more days of dry weather are expected.”

September was quite dry in the region, and if parts of the Midwest and the Northeast continue to be rain-free, this month could be one of the driest Septembers on record, Sosnowski said.

On Thursday, minor flooding may occur in the more vulnerable areas near the water and shore. Some roads and low-lying properties, including parking lots, parks, lawns, and homes and businesses with basements near the water, will experience minor flooding.

On Friday, there is a risk of widespread flooding of vulnerable areas near the shore, including roads, parking lots, parks, lawns, and homes and businesses with basements near the shore. Numerous road closures are possible, and vehicles parked in vulnerable areas near the shore could be inundated. Flooding will also spread inland from the shore along tidal rivers and bays.

There is also a possibility of further flooding along the coast, at least until the weekend.

If you must travel, allow extra time as some roads may be closed, the NWS said. Do not drive around barricades or through waters of unknown depth. Take necessary steps to protect property at risk of flooding.
