Cody Johnson’s Carrie Underwood duet is finally here! (Listen)

Cody Johnson’s highly anticipated duet with Carrie Underwood is a love song called “I’m Gonna Love You” and is released this month.

The “Dirt Cheap” singer shared the news on social media along with photos from a video shoot. “I’m Gonna Love You” is still unreleased, but Johnson had previously said it would be part of the follow-up to the leather Album.

  • Johnson has been talking about recording with Carrie Underwood for over a year and initially said the song would be on leather.
  • When the album was released in November 2023, he clarified that Part B would be released later and their song on The Project.
  • He will release “I’m Gonna Love You” on September 27th.

Fans got an unexpected taste of the new song on Monday night (September 16) when he posted a clip on X. Underwood’s vocals aren’t heard, but the lyrics very clearly hint at a direction for this song.

“Stars will light up a midnight sky / The sun will burn on the Fourth of July / The tide will turn with the moon’s pull / And I will love you,” he sings.

Before CMA Fest 2023, Johnson revealed that another artist had written the song, and after learning that they had decided not to release it, the Texan put it on hold. That artist appears to be Travis Denning. According to Pulse Music Board, he wrote the song with Kelly Archer and Chris Stevens.

A video on Johnson’s Instagram story confirms that Denning wrote the song. He talked about recording it in 2019, before “After a Few” became a hit. The original demo had a woman on harmonies, but it wasn’t a duet. It didn’t become an album.

“I said I didn’t want to record it if I couldn’t have Carrie on it,” Johnson told select media in 2023. “And you know, I loved Carrie’s music, but it’s not – I don’t have a poster of her on the wall, you know? But when I heard that song, I heard her voice and I just knew it was going to work.”

“The Painter” and “Dirt Cheap” are the two hits from leatheran album that also includes collaborations with Jelly Roll and Brooks & Dunn. No information is available about Johnson’s next project.
