College Station ISD graduates reflect on their last first day

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – There was great excitement in College Station ISD on Wednesday as the district welcomed students back to school.

“I’m fine,” said 12th-grader Addison Gattis. “I’m really excited. It’s my last first day of high school as a 12th-grader, so I’m excited.”

Kayla Comte is also a senior who is full of energy as she looks forward to the coming year.

“I’m usually nervous on the first day,” Kayla said. “Not at all. I finally know what I’m doing, so I’m really excited about this year.”

Addison and Kayla attend A&M Consolidated High School and are on the cheerleading squad. Addison, the cheerleading captain, told KBTX she was ready for the lights out Friday night.

“It runs out of the tunnel and we all huddle together right before we run out and it just makes me so excited,” Addison described.

Co-captain Kayla said she is looking forward to the competition season.

“This team pushes itself out of its comfort zone during competition time and it’s cool to see how it makes us improve and evolve each year,” Kayla boasted.

Both cheerleaders have been on the team throughout high school and said their sisterhood gets stronger each year.

“It’s more like a family than just a team,” Kayla explained. “It’s really cool to see how we can rely on each other throughout the year, through good times and bad.”

Although the seniors are ready for the coming year, it is also bittersweet for both of them to realize that this is their last season.

Kayla said her advice to herself is to always be present.

“We just applied to college, so I’m trying to figure out where I’m going and what the rest of my life is going to look like,” Kayla said. “Then I realized that if I keep going like this, I’m going to miss out on so much of this big chapter of my life, so this year I’m definitely trying to stay where I’m at.”

In addition to the cheerful seniors, KBTX also spoke with CSISD Superintendent Josh Symank, Executive Director of Facilities Paul Buckner, Director of Communications Austin Dunson and A&M Consolidated High School Principal Gwen Elder.
