College Station volleyball team defeats Bryan

The College Station volleyball team had an ace up its sleeve, and not just on Tuesday night at Cougar Gym against Bryan.

College Station’s 21 aces helped the team to its 25-11, 25-11 and 25-9 victory over the Lady Vikings.

“We just placed the ball well tonight,” College Station head coach Ashley Davis said of the team’s serve. “We closed the gaps that we were looking for, that’s really all.”

Combined, seven Lady Cougars scored those 21 aces, with Kennedy Voitier leading with seven while Blair Thiebaud trailed her with five. Bella DeLeon and Haley Nash each had three. Addison Novosad, Cooper Binderup and Sarah Patranella each had one.

Voitier began her night with a handful of aces in the first set. Her aces, along with kills from Thiebaud and a couple of errors from Bryan, were part of a 15-0 run that secured the set. College Station began the run with a point to take a 5-4 lead and ended up leading 20-4 in front of an enthusiastic crowd.

“I think we just found chemistry early,” Davis said. “We were in good spirits. We had a couple of rough games where we just weren’t in good spirits, and it’s nice to play at home. We actually play better in front of a loud crowd, even when it’s against us. It wakes us up and makes us play a little better. I think that environment is always something that challenges us.”

A kill by Bryan’s Laila Nutall ended the run, sparking cheers from Bryan’s side of the stands. The Lady Vikings (5-15) managed a few more points and even took a 4-0 lead before College Station won the set.

The second set didn’t produce a 15-0 run, but College Station was able to repeat its success from the first set and win the set without much resistance. Instead of a 15-0 run, College Station managed a couple of 4-0 runs punctuated by a point or two from Bryan before they made another run.

Once again, aces were a factor, as three of College Station’s final five points came from aces. DeLeon, Nash and Voitier each had an ace, while the other two points were kills by Addisyn Green and Thiebaud.

College Station (8-4) scored the final three points of the set and that streak continued in the third set as the Lady Cougars started with a 6-0 run and then completed the sweep.

Thiebaud led the Lady Cougars with 15 kills and was the only College Station player with double figures. Green was second on the team with seven kills. Thiebaud also led the Lady Cougars with 15 assists.

Nash led the team with 11 digs, while Charlotte Taquet, Thiebaud and Olivia Brick each had one solo block and assisted on another.

Bryan is at the BCS Aggieland Showdown at the Legends Event Center Thursday-Saturday. College Station is at the Argyle Sawyer Camillo Tournament Thursday-Saturday.

“College Station is a good team, but when you give a team 51 out of 75, it doesn’t matter how hard you try the other times,” Bryan head coach Emily Hubacek said. “We beat ourselves tonight, we beat ourselves by giving them 68 percent of their 75 points tonight. The good news is that wasn’t our best performance, and I know we can do better. The good news is that it’s only going up.”

NOTES — Both head coaches knew each other very well, as Davis was the head coach at Bryan during Hubacek’s junior and senior seasons. Davis wasn’t sure off the top if this was the first time she coached against one of her former players, but it was definitely a special occasion. “I think it’s a full-circle moment,” Davis said. “She’s doing a great job over there. (It’s) new for her, but I think she’s ready for it and I think they’re just going to get better and better as the season goes on.”
