College student and grandparents lose their home in Park Fire after Camp Fire

Havyn Morris, 19, is preparing for a cosmetology course at Butte College and helping her family rebuild their lives after the Park Fire. Her grandparents’ house, where she lived in Cohasset, was one of many homes razed last month after the Upper Bidwell Park fire broke out.

“I’m trying to cope as best I can, deal with my life and start school,” Morris said.

Losing a home is traumatic enough, but imagine having to go through it twice. That’s the reality for the Morris family, who lost their home in the Camp Fire six years ago and had to go through it again last month in the Park Fire.

“Now that it’s the second time, I know roughly what I need to do,” she said. “During the Camp Fire, I was a minor and couldn’t do much. But now I’m an adult and I can help the family a little more.”

Her family is raising money for GoFundMe to cover costs. They plan to return to Cohasset at some point and possibly set up trailers on their property. Morris says they were able to evacuate with various souvenirs and fill a car with their animals.

“In our little Chevy, our little Chevy Equinox, was my grandmother, one of my uncles, my two dogs and I think it was my guinea pig…or a snake. We were all crammed into this one car and just drove off,” she said.

The family is now looking for one of their two cats named Finley, an 11-year-old orange tabby.

“He was a big orange tomcat,” she said. “We found two cats that looked similar to him, but unfortunately they were younger than him.”

A link to donate and a contact link can be found online here. For those unable to donate financially, Morris said clothing, school supplies or masonry tools would be appreciated, as her grandfather lost his in the fire.
