GAME NOTES

  • The Rams start their third year under head coach Jay Norvell who was named the program’s 24th head coach on December 6, 2021. Norvell led his former program, Nevada, to Sonny Lubick Field in the 2021 finale on November 27 and returned to Fort Collins as the Rams’ new head coach nine days later.
  • Colorado State is seeking its first bowl game since 2017, and the first under Norvell. During his five years in Reno (2017-21), Norvell posted four consecutive seven-win-or-more seasons and led the Wolf Pack to four bowl games.
  • The last time Colorado State defeated all three rivals (Colorado, Wyoming and Air Force) in the same season was in 2002 – the same year the Rams won their last conference championship.
  • Colorado State’s offensive line is full of experience, including the most experienced player in the Mountain West at center Jacob Gardner (47 starts in 47 career games). Garnder and the Rams’ front unit allowed just 14 sacks last season — 11th in the nation — and have allowed just one in two games in 2024 (16th).
  • The Rams will play seven home games in 2024 for the first time in program history, with two rivalries colliding, the Rocky Mountain Showdown against Colorado (Sept. 14) and the Border War against Wyoming (Nov. 15). The last time both rivals were in Fort Collins in the same season was 1996.
  • Colorado State has set a goal of getting better on both sides of the running game in 2024. Norvell has identified 4.0 yards per carry as a target. He wants his offense to exceed that and his defense to hold opponents under it. So far, things are going well, as the Rams are currently averaging 5.1 yards per carry and holding their rivals to 3.9.
