Colts play complementary football and defeat the Chicago Bears for the first win of the 2024 season

The Colts entered Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday morning still hoping for their first win. They were looking to give it their all after their narrow loss to the Green Bay Packers the week before. Thanks to a game full of supplemental football, the Colts did just that, beating the Chicago Bears 21-16.

Anthony Richardson and the Colts offense struggled in the first quarter; their first drive ended with three runs and one out after two incomplete passes from wide receivers Josh Downs and Alec Pierce. On the Colts’ next drive, running back Jonathan Taylor managed three rushing plays to score the Colts’ only first down of the quarter. However, a sack forced the Colts into a third-and-long play, and Richardson’s 13-yard pass was not enough to keep the offense on the field.

In the first quarter, the Colts’ offense was on the field for just four minutes and 35 seconds, and the defense was once again forced to hold the fort. The Bears also failed to score – kicker Cairo Santos missed a 56-yard field goal on their first drive – but ran for 30 yards, and quarterback CJ Williams was five of nine for 27 passing yards.

However, a sack by defensive tackle Taven Bryan gave the Colts some momentum at the end of the quarter, and it seemed to affect the offense. Richardson threw a long 44-yard pass to Pierce, as has become common practice between the two, putting the Colts just four yards away from a touchdown. Three plays later, however, Richardson threw an interception in the end zone and Bears fans around Lucas Oil Stadium roared.

Jaylon Jones said not so fast, however, and intercepted the football himself just minutes later – the first cornerback interception in the NFL – to get the Colts’ offense back on the field. They then marched down the field on a three-play, 70-yard touchdown drive that culminated in a 40-yard pass to tight end Kylen Granson and a 29-yard touchdown run by Taylor.
