Controversial convenience store and gas station chain Sheetz announced plans Monday to open four more stores in the Detroit area.

The announcement said Sheetz also remains on track to open its first Michigan store at 33380 Wick Road in Romulus in late summer, followed by another Romulus store on Middlebelt Road and one in Chesterfield on 23 Mile Road.

Sheetz stores are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and have more than 740 locations in six states.

But councils and planning boards in several major Detroit cities have rejected plans for the proposed Sheetz locations, including in Madison Heights, Rochester Hills and Waterford. Residents previously expressed concerns at public meetings that the stores would create too much traffic and disruption and also pose competition to existing stores.

The four newly announced Sheetz locations are:

  • Taylor, 8200 Telegraph

  • Taylor, 20623 Eureka Rd.

  • Warren, 31925 Van Dyke

  • Macomb Township, 45011 Garfield Road.

A Sheetz spokesman did not respond to Free Press inquiries about the new locations Monday, and the total number of planned Sheetz stores in Michigan was not immediately clear.

According to the Macomb Daily, Eastpointe’s Planning Commission approved site approval for a Sheetz on 9 Mile earlier this month, despite concerns from some residents about traffic congestion and negative impacts on nearby homeowners.

Sheetz is a family-owned business based in Altoona, Pennsylvania. All of its stores are currently located in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Ohio, and North Carolina.

Monday’s announcement also said Sheetz will donate $10,000 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southeast Michigan and $10,000 to Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan.
