Cooling centers open in Evergreen Park, heat index 110 possible

EVERGREEN PARK, IL — A heat wave is returning to the south suburbs, with highs of 110 degrees expected Monday. Residents are reminded that cooling centers are available in Evergreen Park if needed.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat warning for the region that is in effect until 10 p.m. Tuesday, August 27. Temperatures will begin to rise on Saturday, reaching a high of 90. There is a possibility of thunderstorms overnight Saturday into Sunday, according to the weather service.

Sunday will see a high of 90 with a heat index peak of 95; Monday will see a high of 96 with a heat index peak of 110; and Tuesday will see a high of 94 with a heat index peak of 105.
The combination of high temperatures and high humidity creates a dangerous situation where heat-related illnesses are possible. Expect highs of between 35 and 35 degrees Celsius in the afternoon and just above 27 degrees Celsius in the evening.

Check on elderly and disabled family members, friends and neighbors. Keep pets well-watered and indoors or in a shady shelter. Call 911 if you think someone needs to be checked out and you can’t get there yourself, or if you see someone struggling on the street.
