McDonald’s has officially unveiled its new spin-off CosMc’s, a small-format, beverage-focused concept inspired by a nostalgic alien character from the company’s past.

The breakfast-focused restaurant is modeled after McDonald’s popular alien mascot from the ’80s and ’90s. The first CosMc’s location opened in Bolingbrook, Illinois, near McDonald’s headquarters, with additional locations planned across Texas, including in the Dallas-Fort Worth and San Antonio areas.

McDonald’s plans to open around 10 CosMc’s locations by the end of 2024.

What is CosMc’s?

CosMc’s is designed to provide a unique, mood-boosting experience that specifically targets the afternoon slump, with a menu that focuses on bold, innovative beverages. The offering includes a variety of specialty drinks such as churro frappés, turmeric lattes and energy-boosting slushes, as well as a selection of snacks and breakfast items. The format is smaller than a typical McDonald’s and offers a streamlined, digitally-focused drive-thru experience.

This new venture is McDonald’s latest attempt to diversify its brand and compete with popular beverage chains like Starbucks and Dunkin’. The success of these pilot locations will likely determine whether CosMc’s expands in the future.

What’s on the menu at CosMc?

A press release states: “CosMc’s menu is focused on exploring new beverages, offering bold and unexpected flavor combinations, bright colors and functional extras.”

The restaurant offers a range of specialty sodas, teas, mixed drinks and cold brew coffee. There are 15 customizable caffeinated drink options to combat the “afternoon slump.” These include the chain’s Sour Cherry Energy Burst, Popping Pear Slush and Sprite Moonsplash – a Sprite-based drink with citrus and vanilla, served with dried blueberries and lemon slice over ice.

In addition to some McDonald’s classics, CosMc’s savory offerings include a Spicy Queso Sandwich, Savory Hash Brown Bites and Pretzel Bites with dipping sauces. Sweets include a Blueberry Lemon Cookie Sundae and Caramel Fudge Brownies.

Where are other CosMc locations?

The first CosMc’s opened in Bolingbrook, Illinois in December 2023. The restaurant’s limited test run was a success, with the city’s mayor telling CNN that the city’s traffic pattern had to be changed due to the influx of customers.

Who is CosMc?

Longtime McDonald’s fans may remember CosMc, the alien character who appeared in television and print advertisements from 1986 to 1992. He was brought back to life in 2023 and became the mascot of CosMc restaurants.
