The Costco Wholesale Club now requires its members to scan their cards when entering the store.
According to the wholesaler’s customer service website, member scanning devices will be installed at warehouse entrances. Members will be asked to scan their digital or physical membership cards before entering.
Guests with inactive, expired or membership cards without a photo are asked to contact the membership desk before shopping.
The membership card scanner test system was initially installed in some branches across the country in January 2024.
You read that right! Costco is testing membership card scanners at the entrance! This is happening at the Costco in Issaquah, WA, right next to headquarters. They check to see if the photo matches the person. What do you think?! pic.twitter.com/tyeqNPvzzZ

Last summer, Costco announced that employees would be stationed at self-checkout lanes to check members’ IDs.
According to the company’s website, each cardholder can bring up to two guests into the warehouse on each visit, but purchasing items is restricted to Costco members only. Primary members can assign a free household card to one additional person in their household.
The retailer said non-members should not receive the same benefits as cardholders and that membership fees played a big role in enabling the wholesale club to offer low prices.
