BERKLEY – A resale company in Berkley is looking to expand, while another plans to move to a larger space across the street.

Within the next few months, Council Re|Sale, 3297 W. 12 Mile Road, will expand its business into the neighboring space currently occupied by comic book and game store Time Travelers.

Re|Sale is operated by the National Council of Jewish Women, Michigan and currently occupies 6,600 square feet of space. The expansion will add another 4,400 square feet once the wall between the two buildings is demolished.

“We get a tremendous amount of donations coming into the store,” said Amy Zeskind, president of NCJW|MI. “Women’s (clothing), men’s, home goods, jewelry, all kinds of stuff comes into the store and we don’t have room to store all the merchandise that we get. And that also means we have all these great products that we can’t display in the store because we don’t have enough space to meet the demand for what we get.”

The expansion will give Re|Sale full access to the location’s basement, which it previously did not have, to use as storage. General manager Susan Gertner said the store will need to rent a storage unit to store its excess products.

“It’s like expensive real estate when some of our home decor is just sitting on the shelves because there’s no room for it,” she said. “Once we expand, we’ll have a big home decor department, and when we get the donations, they’ll go right into the store instead of sitting around until we make room.”

Time Travelers is planning to move across the street to a store at 3116 W. 12 Mile Road, Suite A. The space will also represent an expansion for the long-established comic book store.

“We would share the space with The Lunch Cafe. When you look at the building, it doesn’t look that big, but once you’re inside, it opens up quite nicely. So it’s about twice the size of the other business,” said owner Michael Morgan.

“When we saw the space, we liked it. We had been looking for a warehouse and the basement of this new space is quite decent,” he continued.

Time Travelers had hoped to move to its new location in May, but even though the sign at the new location is already up, Morgan said there have been some problems with the process.

“There are still some things in the building that need to be completed and we are waiting for them to be completed,” he said. “It has honestly taken a lot longer than expected and unfortunately that has led to a bit of a dispute between us and the landlord.”

The lawsuit with the landlord, about which Morgan declined to comment further, is currently in the 44th District Court.

While Re|Sale looked at other areas to potentially relocate to prior to the expansion and move, the store is happy to keep its Berkeley location.

“We didn’t want to leave Berkeley,” Gertner said. “It’s a perfect location for people coming from Detroit, Southfield or West Bloomfield. So it was a good, good community for us. And when we were looking, we never found what we were looking for. … This just works for us.”
