Court documents shed light on the moments before the shooting at Omaha Northwest High School

OMAHA, Nebraska (WOWT) – The 14-year-old accused of shooting another student at Omaha Northwest High School is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday afternoon.

His hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. A source told 6 News that the boy will be charged as an adult.

Douglas County Court documents filed Tuesday show he was booked into the youth center where he faces charges of first-degree assault, use of a firearm to commit a crime and possession of a firearm on school property.

According to documents, the suspect admitted to shooting the 15-year-old victim once. The boy remains in stable condition in the hospital, according to Omaha police on Wednesday.

According to documents, officers found him wounded in the hallway of the school’s main floor. He had been shot in the upper body.

The affidavit states that school surveillance footage showed the two boys engaging in a physical altercation near a classroom. According to court documents, the suspect had his right hand in the pocket of his hoodie and then fired a concealed firearm through the hoodie, striking the victim, who then fell to the ground. According to documents, the gun was visible in the surveillance footage; the suspect had it in his right hand before putting it back in his pocket while running from the scene.

A few hours later, police asked the public for help in locating a discarded firearm before announcing in a Tuesday evening update that they believed they had found the weapon used in the shooting.

All Wednesday school classes and activities have been canceled. School leadership will instead focus on staffing and providing counselors during this time. Students returning on Thursday will be next in line.

Safety has also once again become a focus for Omaha public schools.

When it comes to school safety, OPS Superintendent Matthew Ray told 6 News that it is an ongoing discussion with many moving parts.

“It’s not just one thing,” Ray said.

All schools have new cameras and locks, and a police officer is stationed in each OPS high school and middle school building.
