The target for Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has not changed after signing a record-breaking $240 million contract extension.

Prescott told reporters after Sunday’s 33-17 win over the Cleveland Browns that winning the Super Bowl was “my only motivation.”

“Keeping up my end of the bargain. I just have to deliver. That’s my motivation,” he said. “Now it’s about celebrating this win tonight. A crazy win with these guys, I’m looking forward to flying back with them, but tomorrow I can turn the page, go to the Saints and take it one game at a time. That’s the most important thing for me. Not the money. It’s about keeping up my end of the bargain. And that’s what I want to do here.”

Prescott’s long-term future in Dallas was one of the biggest offseason stories surrounding the team. He was set to become a free agent in 2025, and losing him to free agency would have been a major blow to the Cowboys.

Negotiations dragged on until the last minute, until it was announced on Sunday that both sides had agreed to a four-year contract that would give Prescott the highest average salary ever in the NFL ($60 million).

Being the Cowboys’ starting quarterback is a heavy burden, no matter how much you make, and this isn’t the first time Prescott received an unprecedented severance package in Dallas that raised expectations.

This time, however, it is a little different because there is an added sense of urgency for everyone involved.

Team owner Jerry Jones turns 82 in October. Prescott is 31 and in his ninth season in the NFL. Wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, who also signed a multi-year contract extension in the offseason, and edge rusher Micah Parsons are both in top form.

The Cowboys need to win a Super Bowl in the next four years, because who knows what their chances of winning the championship will be in 2029 and beyond.

For Prescott, his legacy is on the line. He is on pace to become the winningest quarterback in franchise history, having already thrown for the third-most yards (29,638) and the second-most touchdowns (203). But with no championship on his resume, he will likely be a step below Troy Aikman and Roger Staubach in the eyes of fans.
