CPSC warns consumers to stop using lounge chairs sold at Walmart and Amazon

The US consumer protection agency CPSC is warning consumers not to use and dispose of the loungers of the brands Mamibaby, Yoocaa, DHZJM, Cosy Nation and Hyhuudth with immediate effect. They are advertised as sleeping products, but create an unsafe sleeping environment and pose a risk of suffocation, entrapment and falls for small children. In addition, the manufacturer has not agreed to a recall.

The CPSC is aware of a total of five infant deaths that occurred in connection with baby beds of the Mamibaby, Yoocaa and DHZJM brands.

Mamibaby: Two infants, aged ten days and five months, died in Mamibaby brand baby beds in 2020 and 2021 when the products were used for co-sleeping in bed.

Yoocaa: Two infant deaths are reportedly linked to Yoocaa-branded baby loungers, including one in 2021 in which a three-month-old child was reportedly placed in a Yoocaa-branded baby lounger on top of an adult bed and then found fatally trapped between the adult bed and the bedroom wall. The other death occurred in 2022 in which a four-month-old child was reportedly found unconscious after being placed in a Yoocaa-branded baby lounger with a blanket to sleep.

DHZJM: The fifth infant death in 2020 occurred in a DHZJM branded baby bassinet. It involved a four-month-old child who was reportedly found unconscious and face down on a blanket placed on the bassinet. This death was previously reported in a CPSC alert dated June 6, 2024.

The CPSC-rated Mamibaby, Yoocaa, DHZJM, and Cosy Nation baby loungers violate federal infant sleep product safety regulations because the sides are too low to hold the infant; the sleep pad is too thick, creating a suffocation hazard; and an infant could fall or become trapped through a closed opening at the foot of the lounger. All five brands of baby loungers do not have a kickstand, creating a fall hazard when used on elevated surfaces. These violations create an unsafe sleep environment for infants.

Chinese company Ningbo Tree Nest Children Products CO., Ltd. is listed as the manufacturer of the Yoocaa, DHZJM and Hyhuudth lounge chairs and is also reportedly the manufacturer of the Mamibaby and Cosy Nation brand lounge chairs sold on Amazon.com.

At this time, the manufacturer has not agreed to recall the following non-compliant products: Mamibaby branded baby loungers sold online on Walmart.com for approximately $43 from March 2023 to December 2023; Mamibaby and Cosy Nation branded baby loungers sold online on Amazon.com for $31 to $50 from June 2023 to June 2024; Yoocaa branded baby loungers sold online on Amazon.com for $20 to $87 from January 2021 to June 2023; DHZJM branded loungers sold online on Amazon.com for $17 to $49 from April 2019 to November 2023; and Hyhuudth branded baby loungers sold online on Amazon.com for $39 to $46 from May 2023 to August 2024.

However, two third-party sellers of these products agreed to recall the products they sold. Specifically, Hangzhoumeixiajianzhushejiyouxiangongs of China, doing business under the names MEIXIA Shop and Softbless, recalled the Mamibaby and Cosy Nation branded baby loungers sold on Amazon.com. He Nan Ji Bu Gong Yi Pin You Xian Gong Si of China, doing business under the name Yoocaa Direct, recalled the Yoocca branded lounger on November 2, 2023. It appears that these two third-party sellers were not selling the brand’s baby loungers at the time of the infants’ deaths and/or were not selling the styles and printed fabric options associated with the infants’ deaths.

Mamibaby, Yoocaa, DHZJM, Cosy Nation and Hyhuudth brand baby loungers were sold in multiple styles and printed fabric variations by various third-party sellers and on other websites.

All five brands of bassinet had labels sewn into the covers that read “SLEEP SET.” Most of the bassinet models from Mamibaby, DHZJM, Cosy Nation, and Hyhuudth that were evaluated by the CPSC also had a label sewn onto the outside of the cover with the respective brand name. The CPSC is also aware of some models that were sold without a sewn-on brand label. Bassinet models from DHZJM and Hyhuudth also had a manufacturer’s label sewn into the cover that read “Ningbo Tree Nest Children Products CO. ltd.” The bassinet models from Yoocaa that were evaluated by the CPSC did not have any brand labels on the product, but the packaging listed the manufacturer as “Ningbo Tree Nest Children Products Ltd.”

The CPSC is urging consumers to stop using Mamibaby, Yoocaa, DHZJM, Cosy Nation and Hyhuudth brand baby loungers and immediately destroy them and request a recall if available. Do not sell or give away these dangerous baby loungers. To destroy the product, remove the fabric cover, cut the lounger cover and the inner sleeping pad into pieces and then dispose of the parts in household waste or textile recycling in accordance with local waste disposal regulations.

Although the baby sleep product regulation applies to products manufactured on or after June 23, 2022, these loungers do not have the required manufacturing date label on the product. Therefore, the CPSC is urging consumers to stop using all baby loungers made by Mamibaby, Yoocaa, DHZJM, Cozy Nation, and Hyhuudth. In addition, the CPSC continues to advise companies to stop selling non-compliant baby sleep products regardless of the manufacturing date.

Parents and carers are reminded:

  • The best place for a baby to sleep is on a firm, flat surface in a crib, bassinet or playpen.
  • Use only fitted sheets and never place blankets, pillows, padded bed bumpers or other items in a toddler’s sleeping environment.
  • Infants should always sleep on their backs. Infants who fall asleep in a slanting or upright position should be moved to a safe sleep environment with a firm, flat surface such as a crib, bassinet or playpen.

Report all incidents of injury or product defects to the CPSC at www.SaferProducts.gov.
