D-FW restaurant giant buys Freebirds

Freebirds World Burrito, a fast-casual burrito shop based in Texas, has a new owner.

Farmers Branch-based Sun Holdings, the second-largest franchise organization in the U.S., has acquired the chain for an undisclosed sum, a press release said.

Founded more than 30 years ago, Freebirds is headquartered in Austin after previously operating in College Station. In addition to burritos, it is known for its barbecue dishes, which also include quesadillas and bowls.

“Freebirds brings a distinct and vibrant energy to our portfolio. The brand’s commitment to quality ingredients and a customer-centric approach resonates with us as operators. We believe we can learn from Freebirds in terms of customer loyalty and menu innovation, while bringing our expertise in operations and growth,” said Guillermo Perales, CEO of Sun Holdings, in a statement.

With the deal, Sun Holdings adds 64 Freebirds locations to its portfolio, which also includes concepts such as Applebee’s, Arby’s, Burger King, Golden Corral, IHOP, McAlister’s, Papa John’s, Popeye’s and Taco Bueno. The company operates this multitude of concepts in 27 states.

The purchase of Freebirds is a special undertaking because it is the first time that Sun Holdings is acting not only as a franchisee but also as a brand owner.

“Freebirds is poised for growth and we have an ambitious expansion strategy that we are excited to embark on,” said Perales.

Freebirds once had over 100 locations in seven states, but later pulled out and closed restaurants outside of Texas.

In Dallas, Freebirds has stores at 5500 Greenville Ave. in the Old Town shopping center, at 2000 Ross Ave. and at 5000 Belt Line Rd.
