Damar Hamlin reacts to the first interception of his career and reflects on a “special” experience with the Bills

Security at the Buffalo Bills Damar Hamlin had a memorable night when he made his first interception in the Monday Night Football game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. After the game, Hamlin spoke with ESPN’s Laura Rutledge about the interception of the Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence and share the moment with his teammates.

“This is special, man. They’re a big part of me making this comeback,” Hamlin said. “They pushed me, they gave me love, they gave me grace, they gave me everything I needed along the journey. They were even happier than I was when I caught my first pass. It just shows the community and the bond we have here in Buffalo. It’s really a special place and I’m glad to be a part of it.”

Hamlin also spoke to Rutledge about his feelings after the election and how he helped the Bills to a 47-10 victory over the Jaguars. “There are no words for it, man. I’m still processing all of this,” he explained. “But I’ve been able to take it day by day and my teammates, my coaches, the entire Bills organization has always been there for me and supported me, just like they are now. I’m just really grateful, grateful, grateful that I’m a Buffalo Bill.”

Hamlin finished the night with five tackles and two passes defended, as well as his interception. He continues to work hard after suffering a cardiac arrest at the end of the 2022 season. The medical emergency resulted in Hamlin playing limited hours in the 2023 season, but he was still named a finalist for the Comeback Player of the Year award.

Before the start of the 2024 season, the Bills announced that Hamlin would start as a safety. “He came back hungry,” said the Bills’ general manager Brandon Beane said in August, according to the Associated Press. “His focus is, ‘I want to secure a job. I want to show that I can be in the starting lineup and play.’ And that was his focus, you know, Micha (Hyde) And Jordan (Poyer) are gone. There are new faces. And don’t forget me. I can still do it.'”
