Darlington County neighbors report shots fired as search for OIS suspect continues

According to Chesterfield County Sheriff Cambo Streater, a situation is occurring near Una Road in Darlington County as a result of a blue alert issued Friday morning after a McBee police officer was shot late Thursday night while being called to an incident on 11th Street near McBee High School.

Una Road is closed and community members said dozens of officers from multiple jurisdictions, including the state, Law Enforcement Division (SLED), DNR, Darlington, Florence and Chesterfield counties are on the scene.

A police officer stands at the entrance to the street with his shotgun and neighbors reported hearing gunshots in the area.

A source told ABC 15 that the situation was related to the shooting of the police officer.

Streater said the officer is being treated for his injuries. His exact condition has not been released.

According to the incident report, the officer was shot and injured by 27-year-old Alston Modilin.

The suspect is described as weighing approximately 82 kg, being 1.80 m tall and having brown hair and brown eyes.

Modilin was seen driving west toward Florence in a white 2023 Toyota Tacoma at 6:01 a.m. His car was found at 9:42 a.m. and he was believed to be on foot.

According to a statement from the Chesterfield County School District, the officer was conducting a traffic stop near the McBee High School agriculture building.

The district continued, “Rumors have been circulating that a shooting occurred at McBee High School, and these reports are false. The incident occurred near the high school but was not related to McBee High School itself.”

The State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has taken over the lead of the investigation.

ABC 15 is working to learn more about what is happening and will provide more information as it becomes available.
