Davis County man died after police shot him outside his home, police said

LAYTON — A 59-year-old Layton man is dead after being shot by police officers outside his home Wednesday night, according to Layton police.

Lt. Travis Lyman of the Layton City Police Department said the man’s wife called 911 shortly before 10 p.m. She told dispatchers her husband was in their home, suicidal and armed with a gun. Police arrived at the home near the corner of 1000 North and State Street.

Officers were able to get the woman out of the house safely, Lyman said, but her husband remained inside. Police were able to reach the man “several times off and on” and attempted to force him to peacefully exit the house.

“During the interviews they had with him, he made statements that suggested he wanted to force a confrontation with the officers,” Lyman said.

At some point, an officer heard a gunshot from inside the home, but it was unknown which direction it was fired from or what the bullet hit.

After about 40 minutes, the man came out of the front door with a pistol and a rifle in his hand.

“He was shot by officers on scene and they immediately performed life-saving measures until medical personnel arrived. He was eventually admitted to Holy Cross Davis Hospital in critical condition,” Lyman said.

There were no other injuries, Lyman said.

At around 5:30 a.m., police issued an update saying the man had died in hospital. His name had not been released as of 11 a.m. Thursday.

Neighbors in the area declined to be interviewed on camera but said they heard several gunshots.

The Davis County Critical Incident Protocol Team is conducting the investigation to find out crucial details, Lyman said. He did not specify how many officers were involved, only that they have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the results of the investigation.
