Davis Warren on Michigan’s loss to Texas: “I shot us in the foot”

Davis Warren on Michigan’s loss to Texas: “I shot us in the foot”

When a team wins, the quarterback often gets too much credit, and when a team loses, like Michigan did Saturday in a 31-12 loss to Texas, the quarterback gets most of the blame. With that in mind, Michigan quarterback Davis Warren has taken it easy, holding himself accountable and not pointing fingers.

Warren completed 22 of 33 passes for 204 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions, and the Michigan offense was just 3 of 12 on third down.

“On those third downs, my job as quarterback is to keep us moving, and I have to do a better job of that,” Warren said.

When asked if he was a bit behind in his progress and ball distribution, Warren admitted that there was still room for improvement in that regard.

“That’s where I have to get better. I take what the defense gives me and when the opportunity comes down the field, I throw,” Warren said. “They gave us some opportunities, we had a good read on their defense and didn’t capitalize. It’s up to me to find the open man and gauge what they’re doing on defense, set up the protection right and find the guy that’s going to run the route and get past that coverage. I have to get better.”

Warren said the offensive woes had nothing to do with Texas and were solely the result of the Wolverines’ poor execution. He said, “We made it too easy for them” and “that’s a crappy feeling.”

“I didn’t do enough. I shot us in the foot too many times,” Warren said. “We didn’t do enough offensively and that was on us.”

Although it was a brutal day for Michigan, Warren isn’t letting that dampen his spirits and stop him from moving on, and next week they’ll be at home against Arkansas State.

“We’re better than what we showed today,” Warren said. “The only way to prove that is to do it next Saturday. The game is next Saturday whether we like it or not. The guys in the room, we’re all going to be ready to rewrite the script.”

Michigan is now 1-1 on the season and the Big Ten Conference is just around the corner. They open up in two weeks with USC at Michigan Stadium. Warren and the Wolverines will need to improve quickly to get the season back on track.
