Death at Chicago O’Hare Airport: Virginia Christine Vinton from North Carolina got stuck in the conveyor belt and died in the baggage claim area

CHICAGO– A woman who died Thursday morning at Chicago O’Hare International Airport has been identified, officials said.

It happened early Thursday morning in the baggage area of Terminal 5. The Chicago Fire Department reported that a woman had become entangled in the baggage conveyor belt. She died at the scene of the accident.

The woman was identified as 57-year-old Virginia Christine Vinton of Waxhaw, North Carolina, a Cook County coroner’s office spokesman said Friday.

Chicago police said video showed Vinton, who did not work at the airport, entering an unoccupied restricted area around 2:30 a.m. Her body was found hours later.

Police confirmed that Vinton apparently spent the night at the airport, but why she sneaked into the employee-only area remains a mystery.

Authorities said the area where the incident occurred was off-limits to employees and was considered safe but not a high-security area. It was full of conveyor belts that transport baggage to and from planes in the international terminal, which also go through customs.

Police have not said whether they were able to track Vinton’s activities between 2:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m.

The Cook County coroner ruled Friday that Vinton’s death was suicide. The cause of death was hanging and suffocation.
