Debris from a collapsed house in OBX visible up to 17 kilometers away

RODANTHE, NC (WITN) – The National Park Service says debris from a house that collapsed on the Outer Banks on Friday could be seen from up to 11 miles away.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore officials said they have contacted the owner of the collapsed home on Corbina Drive in Rodanthe.

The NPS says cleanup operations have been authorized along the coast and at Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, beginning around 1 p.m. Saturday.

The beach is closed from Mirlo Beach to the parking lot at the north end of the Jug Handle Bridge.

According to official information, clean-up operations will continue in the coming days.

We have been advised that several other beachfront buildings in northern Rodanthe between GA Kohler Drive and the north end of Mirlo Beach also sustained significant damage. Visitors are asked to avoid the beach in these areas due to dangerous debris.

The NPS also states that there is ongoing erosion and increased surf levels off the village of Buxton, causing the sea to flood under many homes and into residential areas.

Seashore officials say they have seen evidence of damaged sewage systems and are asking the public to avoid entering the water until follow-up inspections can be conducted.
