The decision to fire Albany International Airport CEO Phil Calderone is rife with suspicion. The airport board informed Calderone earlier this month that his contract would not be renewed.

Given that the airport is currently undergoing a $100 million renovation, people are questioning the rationale and wisdom of this decision.

A group of 16 Albany County lawmakers has now written a letter to the airport authority urging them to extend Calderone’s contract.

State lawmakers are calling for transparency but questioning the timing of the Calderone decision.

Many people called Calderone’s ouster a backdoor political maneuver aimed at planting Albany County Executive Dan McCoy as Calderone’s successor. McCoy has since withdrawn from his candidacy for the post.

NewsChannel 13 reached out to Calderone, McCoy and the airport authority for comment. The only response we received came from Calderone’s office. The statement said Mr. Calderone is currently fully focused on the reconstruction project.
