Delaware Democrat on track to become first transgender congressman

Delaware State Senator Sarah McBride could become the first transgender person elected to Congress after winning a primary on Tuesday night.

McBride ran virtually unopposed in the primary as the only candidate to have raised any money at all, and was able to count on the support of Delaware Senators Chris Coons and Tom Carper, as well as Representative Lisa Blunt Rochester, who is running to succeed Carper in the Senate.

McBride has already been the first transgender senator in the United States after winning election to the Delaware Senate in 2020. The 33-year-old activist turned politician argues that there needs to be more diverse representation in Congress.

Delaware’s seat in the House of Representatives has been held by Democrats since 2010. President Joe Biden defeated former President Donald Trump by 19 points in 2020.

McBride raised nearly $3 million in donations from supporters across the country. She first gained national attention at the 2016 Democratic National Convention when she became the first openly transgender person to speak at a major party convention.

McBride was the only candidate in the primary to raise any money, and she had the support of Senators Chris Coons and Tom Carper of Delaware and Representative Lisa Blunt of Rochester.

McBride will now have to compete against one of two candidates in the Republican primary.

McBride’s candidacy comes amid a fierce national debate over transgender policies, particularly as they relate to minors. Republican states have passed laws in recent years banning or restricting gender reassignment services for minors, arguing that doing so could have long-term health consequences.

Some female athletes urged lawmakers to require transgender people to compete in sports teams that correspond to the biological sex assigned at birth.

McBride argues that the bill is an example of right-wing extremism.

“In 2020, I was elected as the first openly transgender person nationwide to serve as a Senator. It truly felt like America was forging a path forward. But since then, the far right has sought to use the LGBTQ community as a scapegoat for their political failings,” McBride wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “As they have ramped up their attacks on families and children, it has become even clearer: for our democracy to work, it must include all of us. If elected, I will be the first openly transgender member of Congress.”
