If you want to get a snapshot of the economic situation in St. John’s, take a look at what’s happening at the Salvation Army’s largest thrift store on Kenmount Road.

There is a brisk sales there as consumers look for bargains.

The problem is that donations cannot keep up and have even decreased, says the branch manager.

Letty Stone said she sees people from all walks of life come through the doors every day. She has seen demand increase in recent years and says the cost of living plays a role.

“Unfortunately, the demand for support has increased,” Stone told CBC News this week.

“With the economic situation and the current situation, everyone needs a little help.”

Ted Troughton, national general manager of The Salvation Army’s thrift stores, said sales at the St. John’s store exceed donations by 23 percent.

We’re seeing people trying to find a way to make more out of their money,” he said.

“We receive tremendous donations here in Newfoundland, but we are looking for more.”

Troughton said similar situations are occurring in other parts of Canada.

The Salvation Army is always looking for donations of items such as clothing, home accessories and household appliances.
