Denver International Airport expects a travel boom and queues at the TSA on Labor Day

Denver International Airport officials are preparing for a rush of travelers during Labor Day, which begins Thursday as Americans extend their record-breaking summer travel season.

DIA officials have predicted that a record 444,500 passengers will pass through the airport’s checkpoints between Thursday (August 29) and Tuesday (September 3), with the busiest times of day being Friday and Monday.

The forecast represents an increase of 5.1% compared to the Labor Day period of 2023 at the DIA.

Airport officials warned travelers this week that they should expect longer wait times at security checkpoints and relatively full parking lots. They recommended that travelers arrive at the airport at least two hours before departure.

To speed up airport processes, DIA has launched a security screening reservation system that allows travelers to make free reservations up to 14 days before their flight—reservations with 15-minute time slots that allow them to skip the security line. These are only available for the West Security Checkpoint between 4 a.m. and 7:30 p.m.

“Travelers can rest assured,” said airport spokesman Michael Konopasek.

DIA officials plan to post updated information on parking availability, security wait times and various security checkpoints.

Nationally, the Transportation Security Administration is preparing to screen more than 17 million people between August 29 and September 4. Federal agency officials report record summer travel volumes, up 8.5% from last year. TSA officials said this year has seen the 10 busiest travel days in the agency’s history since May. On July 7, TSA officers screened more than 3 million travelers in one day.
