Deputy and police officer shot, suspect dead in Kaufman County – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

A Kaufman County Sheriff’s deputy and a Crandall officer responded to a panic alarm early Saturday morning.

Authorities responded to an Exxon gas station along Farm Road 741 in Heartland around 3:09 a.m.

Upon arrival, the deputy and officer encountered a male suspect in the parking lot. The suspect showed officers a firearm and shots were fired, Crandall police said.

According to a report from the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Department, both officers were shot in the legs and the suspect was also shot.

They were taken to Baylor University Medical Center Dallas with non-life threatening injuries.

Although life-saving measures were performed on the suspect, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers were transported to Baylor Hospital in Dallas with non-life-threatening injuries.

The store owner said his clerk called police after two women came into the store and said the suspect came at them with a gun. He said they locked the doors and everything else happened in the parking lot.

Investigators spent hours Saturday marking evidence in the gas station parking lot, placing dozens of markers next to bullet casings and other remnants of the shooting.

Carnell McCurdy was one of several neighbors who stopped to watch while lamenting what he said was a noticeable increase in crime.

“I moved here about a year ago. And about four or five months ago, I saw a lot of different things coming into the neighborhood,” McCurdy said.

“At this point, it doesn’t surprise me because there’s too much going on,” Sylvester Henderson said.

Henderson also recently moved here from Pleasant Grove. He hopes the shooting will be a wake-up call for his neighbors.

“You see all this on social media. You see it in the small Heartland groups that people are getting angry, and then something like the shooting of the police happened. Will this ever raise awareness? Will someone do something?” he said.

This investigation is ongoing and is being led by the Texas Rangers.
