Derik Chandler, 24, was arrested on June 19 for assaulting Philip McCoy Jr. at a Walmart on Charlotte Pike. That day, McCoy, a Walmart theft prevention officer, reported to police that he observed Chandler and another man acting strangely on camera. McCoy mentioned that he approached the two individuals and spoke on the phone with Walmart security to inform them of the situation. McCoy then noticed one of the men was holding a laundry basket containing $200 worth of health and beauty products. While McCoy was still on the phone, one of the men approached McCoy and struck him in the head, causing injuries. Chandler and the other individual then fled through an emergency door without returning the stolen items.

On August 11, McCoy called police again after noticing the same people at Walmart. Officers arrived and arrested Chandler. They then viewed video footage of McCoy showing the June 19 attack. Officers concluded that the footage showed Chandler as the person who attacked McCoy. Chandler was subsequently taken into custody on August 12 on charges of assault and theft.
