“I think it’s kind of the culmination of all our efforts as a community, all the things the city is doing to revitalize areas like Midtown and Downtown and drive demand. It’s great to see new businesses coming to town,” said Chris Ortegon of Destination Bryan.

Ortegon said that from November 2018 through 2023, total spending in downtown Bryan was nearly $1.3 million, resulting in nearly $2 million in sales tax revenue.

“After COVID, everyone wasn’t sure when demand would pick back up, but we’re actually on track to have the best hotel demand of the year,” Ortegon said. “I know July was really solid as well, and with the Legends Events Center running all of the events, it was a big generator of a lot of that impact on our community.”

KBTX spoke with Mikhaila Hoffman, one of the co-owners of Parker-Astin, a new art gallery that opened in Downtown Bryan in July. Hoffman was co-owner of the now-closed Village Cafe.

Hoffman said she couldn’t imagine opening Parker-Astin anywhere else.

“We had such a great community through The Village and we wanted to keep that community and the arts and culture alive in that space,” Hoffman said. “Staying in that area and keeping that culture together was really what we wanted, that’s why we stayed.”

The many new openings have created a community of growth and innovation, says Hoffman.

“It’s been nice to grow together and be able to talk to each other about our businesses and their growth and development,” Hoffman said.

Bryan City Councilwoman Marca Ewers-Shurtleff said the many businesses that will be based in Bryan in the coming months are a testament to the city’s growth.

“Any time we bring a new business, especially a small one based in Brazos County, it adds to your kid’s T-ball team,” Ewers-Shurtleff said. “We’re all thrilled that our residents in Bryan are doing so well. They’ve invested in our community and the City of Bryan is happy to invest in them.”

The City of Bryan said the City of Bryan’s population has grown by an estimated 65,000 people since 2020.

“Bryan has really benefited from strong growth recently, as you can see from our retail, our stores and our manufacturing facilities, and a byproduct of that is of course an increase in the population wanting to move to the city of Bryan,” Ewers-Shurtleff said. “This year alone, we have received 500 permits for brand new construction, and that doesn’t include people moving into existing homes or other housing arrangements.”
