Drink plenty of fluids and keep a cool head in extreme heat

Fall is upon us, but summer isn’t quite over yet. Temperatures hit the 95 degrees mark earlier this week, and there could be more days like that to come, as Detroit has already seen temperatures above 90 degrees in September.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends staying hydrated and limiting time outdoors during extreme heat to reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion, heat rash and heat stroke. Detroit health officials also remind residents to check on their families, friends and neighbors during extreme heat – especially the elderly, people with health problems or people who live alone – and to watch for signs of heat-related illnesses such as nausea, confusion and fast or slow heartbeat.

The CDC offers a “HeatRisk” calculator on its website to help individuals determine their risk of extreme heat stress. For more information on heat-related illnesses, visit cdc.gov.

More severe storms ahead

Strong storms are expected again this afternoon and evening, and skies will be clear again on Saturday and Sunday. Temperatures and humidity will remain high this weekend, with highs of between 27 and 30 degrees expected.

About 10,000 homes in the Detroit metropolitan area were still without power as of 4 p.m. Friday, according to outage maps from DTE Energy and Consumers Energy. Customers who experienced extended power outages this week may be eligible for credits from their electric provider.

The Hamtramck Labor Day Festival begins

The 44th annual Hamtramck Labor Day Festival runs the entire weekend of August 31 through September 2 from noon to 10 p.m. and features live music, rides, food vendors and more. The festival concludes on Monday with a performance by Jack White, accompanied by Detroit garage rockers The Hentchmen – with WDET’s Mike Latulippe, host of The Detroit move.
