Diamondbacks place star infielder Ketel Marte on 10-day IL

The Arizona Diamondbacks placed star infielder Ketel Marte on the 10-day injured list on Monday, a day after he aggravated his sprained left ankle on a check swing.

In a corresponding move, Arizona has recalled outfielder Pavin Smith from Triple-A Reno.

Marte had missed three straight games before starting as a designated hitter against the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday. He was not in the lineup on Sunday, but entered the game against the Rays as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning and went down after a check swing and needed help leaving the field.

Marte, a two-time All-Star, leads the Diamondbacks this season in batting average (.298), hits (130), home runs (30) and RBIs (81).

Smith has a .270 batting average (17-for-63) with three home runs and 16 RBIs in 29 games this season. In parts of five seasons with the Diamondbacks, he has a .242 batting average with 31 home runs and 132 RBIs in 330 games.

The Diamondbacks lost to the Rays 8-7 in 12 innings for the third straight time. The Rays’ three-game sweep of Arizona was the Diamondbacks’ first losing streak since June 26-28.

The Diamondbacks have secured a wild-card spot in the NL after finishing 28-13 since the beginning of July.
