Sometimes it’s hard to remember that the NFL has two sets of rules for overtime between the regular season and the postseason.
In the regular season, if the team that receives the ball first scores a touchdown, the game is over. The other team is not allowed to touch the ball.
Things are different in the playoffs, and perhaps that’s what happened to Cris Collinsworth on Sunday night as the Detroit Lions marched diligently down the field to finally score a touchdown in overtime to beat the Los Angeles Rams.
“You start thinking about how much you need before you line up and shoot,” Collinsworth said. “You start thinking about which side the kicker should shoot from?”
This was when the Lions were in the red zone and you could hear Mike Tirico trying to convince Collinsworth that a touchdown would win the game.
“You start thinking about it, right? You start thinking about how much you need before you line up and shoot? You start thinking about which side you want your kicker to be able to shoot from?”

Cris Collinsworth simply forgot the overtime rule. There’s no covering that up.
