The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported good news for fleets and drivers this week: Average diesel costs in the U.S. have fallen significantly compared to the last two weeks.

On August 12, the national average price of diesel at the pump fell 5 cents to $3.704 per gallon, 67 cents less than the same period last year. This decline was seen to varying degrees across the country, with diesel prices falling anywhere from less than a cent to nearly 6 cents depending on the region.

Diesel prices fell the least in the Rocky Mountain region, where they fell less than a cent to $3.697. On the West Coast (excluding California), diesel prices fell a few cents more, down 3 cents per gallon to $3.913. In the Midwest and West Coast (including California), diesel prices fell 4 cents to $3.681 and $4.309, respectively.

On the high end, diesel prices on the East Coast fell 5 cents to $3.778 per gallon, while diesel prices in California fell to $4.763. The Gulf Coast saw the biggest price drop, down 6 cents to $3.371. Taking all of these adjustments into account, the Gulf Coast is still the cheapest place to buy diesel at $3.37, while California remains the most expensive at $4.76 per gallon.
