Many of us regularly rush to a department store to find a cute baby gift or pick up a little special something for a bridal shower.

But stop to notice unique artwork, unusual design elements and architectural splendor that bear witness to an earlier and particularly elegant era?

Not every store can boast such a great view, but the spectacular ship-like structure at 401 S. Lake Avenue in Pasadena has plenty of charms built into the eye-catching building.

To further deepen the ship-centric imagery, Pasadena Walking Tours will “immerse” itself in these delights, incorporating Macy’s into the stylish landmark, a destination that blends modern and midcentury that began as Bullock’s department store in 1947.

“From Bullock’s to Macy’s” takes a tour of everything from men’s fashion to home goods and beyond on Sunday, August 25. Tickets are on sale now for the walking tour, a rare highlight from the Pasadena-leading tour company. (Understandable, since it takes place during Macy’s hours and requires some special arrangements, which the store is kindly providing.)

The “rarer” part is something to keep in mind if you are interested in attending; previous tours of this extraordinary architectural gem have sold out quickly.

Stories are told about the building’s architects, Wurdeman & Becket, as well as the artists behind some of the beautiful pieces that still adorn the walls.

Also fondly remembered is landscape architect Ruth Shellhorn, the visionary who gave Bullock’s its iconic California outdoor character. Disneyland fans will know Ms. Shellhorn, an innovative designer who laid much of the beautiful green groundwork for the theme park we know today.

Those who frequent this Macy’s store today are familiar with the fireplace near the east entrance with its seating area that looks like something out of Sunset magazine, the forest murals in the cosmetics department, and all the ship-inspired details, from the portholes on parts of the exterior to the colorful world map in the children’s department.

Expect to visit all of these places, plus a few other surprising spots, on the two-hour tour.
