Disney announces permanent closure of Hollywood Studios attraction

Lightning McQueen has reached the finish line.

Lightning’s race is almost over…

Disney just made a surprise announcement that a BRAND NEW show featuring Disney Villains is coming to Hollywood Studios in the summer of 2025! However, this new attraction will permanently displace a relatively long-running attraction in the park.

A Disney press release said the new show would take place in the “reflective realm of the Magic Mirror” and “will feature appearances by dozens of the most notorious evildoers, with diabolical nemeses Cruella de Vil, Captain Hook and Maleficent each breaking through the glass and taking the stage in live production numbers.”

However, at the very end of Disney’s announcement was the confirmation that Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy would have to be closed for the opening of the new show.

“Before these vicious monsters take center stage at the Sunset Showcase, guests should take a lap around the Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy race track before October 7,” Disney said.

Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy

Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy, based on the main character of the popular Pixar Cars Franchise, opened in 2019 and is a “high-octane, one-of-a-kind show that puts you right in the middle of the world of Disney and Pixar Cars Universe” according to Disney. The show features the titular Lightning as well as other Cars Characters including Tow Mater and Cruz Ramirez.

Naturally, Cars Fans should not worry too much. Lightning and Co. may be leaving Hollywood Studios, but sooner or later they will be back in Walt Disney World as part of the huge Cars Expansion for the Frontierland of the Magic Kingdom. Together with CarsDisney Villains will also be coming to Magic Kingdom, a brand new Villains Land!

A new area themed to Pixar Animation Studios’ Cars awaits you in Magic Kingdom’s Frontierland, leaving Radiator Springs and heading into the wild with two new attractions, including an off-road race.

But before the new Cars Rides and Villains Land are open, Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy will close next month at Hollywood Studios to make way for a NEW Disney Villains show. Stay tuned to AllEars for more on this NEW show.
