Disney World and Disneyland Parks news announced at D23 Showcase

Disney transformed Saturday night’s D23 show into a true all-star concert, bringing top-notch talent to the stage to perform classic songs from Disney films and help introduce an avalanche of new attractions and lands based on the company’s intellectual properties.

Artists included Meghan Trainor, Shaboozey, Rita Ora, Plain White T’s, Pentatonix, Chromeo, Abi Carter, Tank and the Bangas and All-4-One, with appearances and performances by Billy Crystal, John Stamos, Darren Chris, Skylar Astin and Ke Huy Quan.

The presentation was led by Josh D’Amaro, President of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, who helped introduce all of the new offerings.

“These are the real Disney fans. They have a shared history with us. They have memories of their families being here. They have a passion for our stories, they have a passion for our actors,” says D’Amaro. The Hollywood Reporter of the audience at the D23 panel. “We’re doing our best to make sure we cover the world and present our ambitions in a very creative, narrative way. And we know our fans will carry that message to the rest of the world. It’s the best place in the world for us to talk about the future.”

This year’s presentation took place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, which has a capacity of about 12,000 people, about twice as many people in attendance as in past years when the event was held at the Anaheim Convention Center.

The parks and experiences business is a top priority for Disney, and the company has invested $60 billion in expanding Disneyland in California, Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, its international parks in France, China and Japan, and other parts of the world through its Disney Cruise Line.

There will be a Disney Villains Land in the Magic Kingdom

D’Amaro confirmed that a major new land based on Disney villains will be coming to the Magic Kingdom in Orlando. Details are still scarce, but it will feature shopping, restaurants and two “major new attractions.”

“This country will be home to the villains you know and those you loathe,” D’Amaro said after an appearance by progeny Villain Rita Ora.

“Be prepared, you poor, unfortunate souls,” he added. “It will be a fearless new vision of what a Disney experience can be.”

A “Monsters, Inc.” land is coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios

The 2001 Pixar film Monsters Inc. will form the backbone of an entire land at Hollywood Studios in Orlando. Billy Crystal, who played Mike Wazowski in the film, helped introduce the new land (“When they showed me the character, it was just this one big eye and these big legs, and I thought, oh my God, that’s CBS in action!” Crystal joked onstage).

The land takes people into the world of Monstropolis and features a special ride that takes visitors into the vault alongside Mike and Sully.

“When I first saw Monsters Inc.. I just wanted to ride on one of those doors like Mike and Sulley,” D’Amaro told the crowd. “You’re going to go into the factory and experience the first suspended roller coaster in a Disney park. Remember in the movie how those claws grab the doors and lift them up in the air to take them away? We’re doing that too. And you’re going to ride along.”

The Avengers Campus in Disneyland will be twice as big with two new attractions (and Robert Downey Jr.)

Disneyland’s Avengers Campus will be twice as big as before, as it will be getting two new attractions: Avengers Infinity Defense and Stark Flight Lab. And Robert Downey Jr. will be joining the cast.

During the presentation, D’Amaro shared a photo of Downey testing one of the rides with Disney CEO Bob Iger and announced that the actor will reprise his role as Tony Stark in “Stark Flight Lab.”

In Infinity Defense, visitors travel to various worlds of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including Wakanda, Asgard and, er, New York City, where they fight Thanos.

In the Stark Flight Lab, visitors can test the new Stark brand capsules.

New attractions “Encanto” and “Indiana Jones” are coming to Disney’s Animal Kingdom

D’Amaro and Bruce Vaughn, chief creative director of Disney Imagineering, announced details of Tropical Americas, the new land that will replace DinoLand at Animal Kingdom in Orlando.

The two attractions are based on the Indiana Jones Franchise and film 2021 Magicaland both will open in 2027 in conjunction with Tropical Americas.

The Indiana Jones The ride “takes place in an ancient Mayan temple that Indy recently discovered,” said D’Amaro, warning of an “ancient mythical creature” that could disrupt the situation. He was joined by Ke Huy Quan, who in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

D’Amaro and Disney Imagineer Ali Rubinstein officially announced the upcoming Avatar Land will come to Disney’s California Adventure.

Rubinstein said the new land would be set in a new location on Pandora (very different from the one in Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Orlando), inspired by Avatar: The Way of Water and the upcoming Fire and Ashesand future Avatar Movies.

There will also be a new Avatar On this cruise, guests will take the boat “on an excursion in search of majestic natural wonders found only on Pandora,” Rubinstein said.

Two car-themed rides will be coming to Frontierland in the Magic Kingdom

In important news for Walt Disney World, D’Amaro said that part of Frontierland in the Magic Kingdom will be converted into two attractions that will be based on the Cars Pixar franchise.

One ride takes guests off-road and another is specifically designed for families with small children.

“The American West has always been about keeping your eyes on the horizon…believing in yourself, forging your own path and striving for success,” D’Amaro said. “That applies to miners in the mountains, bears in the country, a princess from the bayou…or a race car from the big city.”

Disney’s California Adventure gets a “Coco” ride

D’Amaro revealed that a new ride inspired by the film coconut will come to Disney’s California Adventure, with groundbreaking planned for 2026. Details are sparse, but D’Amaro said it was “inspired by Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean” and guests would take a trip to the Land of the Dead from the film.

Disney’s second park in France, which will be renamed Disney Adventure World, is already getting a new Frozen World (D’Amaro says it will open in 2026), and now there will also be a ride inspired by the classic 1994 cartoon The Lion King.

There will be themed restaurants and shopping, as well as characters, and the ride will allow visitors to delve into the caves and follow Simba on his journey from cub to king. “It will feel like you’ve stepped right into this movie,” D’Amaro said.

Disneyland gets an Audio-Animatronic Walt Disney

For the first time, an audio-animatronic version of Walt Disney will come to a Disney park when Disneyland debuts the show “Walt Disney – A Magical Life” in 2025.

The show will premiere at the Main Street Opera House and after the first series of performances, the attraction will alternate with “Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln.”

D’Amaro said that creating a Walt Disney animatronic “is an idea that has been whispered in the hallowed halls of Imagineering for years, maybe even decades… We’re finally ready.”

Roy P. Disney was in the audience and D’Amaro said the Disney family was on board with the new show.
