Diversity Plaza’s new Splash Pad provides cooling in Walnut Creekside Park

Diversity Plaza’s new Splash Pad provides cooling in Walnut Creekside Park

No need to visit huge regional parks in Rowland Heights or Arcadia when Walnut Creekside Park brings so much shady beauty to a less-visited strip of the San Gabriel Valley — now with a wading pool.

Two years ago, the city began a now $2.7 million project in the park called Diversity Plaza, which included the pad, decorative benches and concrete inscriptions, a new shade structure and a restroom building that houses the wading pool’s pump room.

Due to supply chain issues, there were delays in the delivery of key electrical components and the facility took another year to complete. The planned summer opening has therefore been postponed from 2023 to 2024.

Funding for the plaza came from Prop. A, Measure A, American Rescue Plan (ARPA), Measure W and parking replacement funds. Last week, the city accepted project work as complete.

As mentioned, Creekside Park has a lot more to offer besides the new water play area. The long hillside park is full of shade and features a large playground, sand volleyball court, tai chi area, baseball fields and exercise equipment.
