Dodgers’ Ohtani becomes first MLB player to join 50-50 club – NBC Los Angeles

Shohei Ohtani is the official founder of the 50-50 Club.

Ohtani on Thursday became the first Major League Baseball player to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in the same season, accomplishing the feat against the Miami Marlins.

It was Ohtani’s second home run of the game, giving Los Angeles a 14-3 lead in the seventh inning. Ohtani was 5-of-5 batters with seven RBIs in his historic performance.

Before the Los Angeles Dodgers star reached 50-50, the player who came closest to making history was Atlanta Braves star Ronald Acuna Jr. Acuna Jr. stole a whopping 73 bases during the 2023 season but managed just 41 home runs, winning the NL MVP award.

Given Ohtani’s record-breaking numbers, it’s likely he’ll receive similar individual accolades.

In addition to Ohtani and Acuna Jr., there are four other players in the 40-40 club: Jose Canseco, Oakland Athletics (1988), Barry Bonds, San Francisco Giants (1996), Alex Rodriguez, Seattle Mariners (1998) and Alfonso Soriano, Washington Nationals (2006).

Ohtani, 30, is also the only member of another statistical category: He is the only player in NL or AL history to record 30 home runs and 10 wins on the mound in a single season (2022) and 30 home runs and 100 strikeouts (2021).

Ohtani, who played as a designated hitter this season due to an elbow injury, is expected to return to the mound as a pitcher in the 2025 season.

In the 2023 season with the Los Angeles Angels, Ohtani posted a 3.14 ERA with a 10-5 record in 132 innings pitched.

The Japanese star will look to return to his two-way dominance once he is allowed to pitch regularly again, but for now all eyes are on his hitting and baserunning abilities.

Dillon Kohler of SCP Auctions says Shohei Ohtani’s historic 50th home run is likely to fetch six figures, possibly as much as $500,000.
