Dollar General dominates new store openings

Dollar General dominates new store openings

The discounters Dollar General and Dollar Tree were featured in the first issue of Supermarket News’ Monthly branch map with a total of 87 branch openings and seven branch closures.

Between July 15 and August 13, a total of 96 grocery stores opened and 18 closed in the United States.

This interactive look into the grocery landscape is the result of a monthly partnership with ScrapeHero.com, an online data analytics company that monitors the websites of retailers across the country to keep an eye on their locations.

The first edition of the SN business card includes 10 grocers with store openings and closings. Readers can hover over each icon to see the store brand, address, and whether the store is open or closed.

This project is by no means intended to be a complete map of all grocery chains and simply represents changes in the number of stores based on each grocery retailer’s online reporting to the public.

For example, we know that Aldi has been rapidly opening new stores in the US, but these are not yet reflected by our partners at ScrapeHero.com. They are expected to appear next month.

Here’s a breakdown of how many stores in each chain opened or closed last month:

  • Albertson’s: 1 closed
  • Costco: 3 opened
  • Dollar-General: 72 opened; 5 closed
  • Dollar Tree: 15 opened; 2 closed
  • Hy-Vee: 4 opened; 1 closed
  • Publix: 1 open; 2 closed
  • Goal: 3 opened
  • Trader Joe’s: 1 opened
  • Walgreens: 2 closed
  • Walmart: 2 closed
