Dolphins force two turnovers and lose 24-3 to Seahawks

The Miami Dolphins forced two turnovers and recorded three sacks, but the strong defensive performance was not enough to defeat the Seattle Seahawks in a 24-3 loss on Sunday afternoon at Lumen Field.

Quarterback Skylar Thompson, appearing in his first regular season appearance since Week 18 of the 2022 season, completed 13 of 19 passes for 107 yards. He left the game in the third quarter and was later ruled out with a pectoral injury. Quarterback Tim Boyle, making his first appearance with the Dolphins, replaced Thompson and completed 7 of 13 passes for 79 yards.

Seattle scored on the game’s first drive after quarterback Geno Smith connected with wide receiver Tyler Lockett for an 18-yard gain to push the Seahawks into Dolphins territory. Kicker Jason Myers then sank a 56-yard field goal to give Seattle a 3-0 lead with 10:49 left in the first quarter.

After a missed 57-yard field goal by Dolphins kicker Jason Sanders, the Seahawks used a combination of running and passing attacks to quickly storm down the field. A four-yard touchdown run by running back Zach Charbonnet put the Dolphins behind by 10 points early on.

After a 51-yard punt by Jake Bailey, Miami’s defense managed a crucial turnover.

On third-and-15 at Seattle’s five-yard line, Smith – while under pressure from Miami’s pass rush – was intercepted by cornerback Kader Kohou on a pass intended for Charbonnet, who was deflected into the air by him. When the Dolphins started the ensuing offensive drive at Seattle’s six-yard line, they were unable to take full advantage of field position and had to settle for a 23-yard field goal.

Seattle extended its lead to 17-3 on the final play of the first quarter when Smith passed to Metcalf down the field for a 71-yard touchdown – the only play of the explosive scoring drive.

The Dolphins recorded their second possession of the game with 0:46 left in the third quarter when defensive tackle Zach Sieler intercepted a pass that was deflected by defensive tackle Calais Campbell.

Boyle took over at his own 48-yard line and led the Dolphins on an 11-play, 50-yard drive to Seattle’s two-yard line, but was left scoreless after an incomplete pass on fourth down intended for running back De’Von Achane.

Both teams remained scoreless until the 4:55 mark of the fourth quarter, when Charbonnet crossed the pylons for a second time on a 10-yard run, sealing Seattle’s victory.

Achane led the Dolphins’ running game with 30 yards on 11 carries. Rookie running back Jaylen Wright had his most productive day as a pro, rushing for 17 yards on both of his attempts.

Wide receiver Tyreek Hill was Miami’s leading pass catcher with 40 yards on three catches. Wideout Jaylen Waddle caught the team’s most passes with four for 26 yards, and receiver Dee Eskridge caught a pass for 30 yards in his Dolphins debut – Miami’s longest play from the lineup. Eskridge played three seasons for the Seahawks from 2021-2023.

Safety Jordan Poyer and former Seattle linebacker Jordyn Brooks paced Miami’s defense with nine tackles, while cornerback Jalen Ramsey tied for the game’s most with two tackles and yards for loss. Defensive tackle Da’Shawn Hand recorded his first sack as a Dolphin on the game’s first drive, while Sieler and Campbell each recorded a sack in the second and third quarters, respectively.

Miami returns to Hard Rock Stadium to face the Tennessee Titans (0-3) on Monday, September 30. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.
