Dolphins QB Skyler Thompson out in Week 3 against Seahawks due to chest injury

The Miami Dolphins’ quarterback situation got even worse during their 24-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 3.

Skyler Thompson started for Miami while Tua Tagovailoa was on the injured list while recovering from a concussion, but the third-year signal caller was ejected from the game after taking three hard hits to the rib area from the Seahawks defense.

Third-stringer Tim Boyle took over for the Dolphins at the start of the third quarter when the team was trailing 17-3. Thompson suffered a chest injury, according to CBS sideline reporter Melanie Collinp.

Before halftime, Thompson didn’t even see the defender coming as he rolled out of the zone and Derick Hall came from behind for a devastating tackle.

On Miami’s first possession of the second half, Thompson was hit hard again on a blitz through the middle by Tyrel Dodson on third-and-2.

The hit that took Thompson out of the game came on the Dolphins’ next series when Dre’Mont Jones tackled him to the ground. Miami finally seemed to be able to mount a proper attack after the quarterback completed a 17-yard pass to Tyreek Hill. But on the next play, Thompson was hit in the stomach after a five-yard toss to De’Von Achane.

Thompson was able to walk to the locker room without assistance. He reportedly did not suffer a serious chest injury as the Dolphins initially feared. But he was done for the day. On the day, Thompson threw for 107 yards, completing 13 of 19 passes. Boyle added 79 yards on 7 of 13 passing.

Earlier this week, the Dolphins signed Tyler Huntley from the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad. Boyle was promoted from Miami’s practice squad and was certainly active, having at least some familiarity with the team’s offense.

Huntley was listed as an emergency QB for Sunday’s game. But if Thompson is out next week, he will presumably be active for the Week 4 game. Perhaps the former Pro Bowler could even start if coach Mike McDaniel believes Huntley’s broader skill set gives the Dolphins a better chance to win.

Tagovailoa will miss at least three more games on the injured list, but he could be out longer depending on how he recovers in concussion protocol and how everyone involved assesses his health.
