“Don’t shout!” sign removed from Baraboo public park

BARABOO, Wis. (WMTV) – Baraboo officials removed a typed document that was printed and attached to a city sign that read “No Yelling!” and asked people in a public park to be quiet.

Ryan Daum, interim director of Baraboo’s Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department, took down the anonymous sign during his lunch break Tuesday after someone on his team saw a picture of the sign on a municipality Facebook page.

“It’s an adjustment period,” he said. “A lot of neighbors are finding out what’s happening in the park that they’re not used to. A lot of people are enjoying the park now because it’s new and fresh.”

Pierce Park was built by the city in June.

Daum said he did not know who put up the “Don’t Yell!” sign and said no one had filed a complaint with the city.

“If you put up that sign, a lot of other people are going to think, ‘Hey, I can put up a sign that says whatever I want,'” he said. “And we prefer to have those things monitored by us.”

Bailey McCulloch lives across the street from Pierce Park and she said the complaint about the makeshift and anonymous sign came as a surprise to her.

“At first I was shocked because I definitely knew it didn’t come from the city,” she said. “Then I was shocked again because it’s an outdoor park.”

McCulloch said the park is not something that bothers her or her family.

“It’s a park. The kids will be loud. The kids will have fun,” she said. “The kids in the neighborhood love it. Someone obviously doesn’t.”

Baum said people with complaints should properly contact his office at 608-355-2760 or email [email protected].
