(Gray News) – A candy recall originally announced in May has been classified as high risk by the Food and Drug Administration.

Palmer Candy was notified by a supplier that its liquid frosting may be contaminated with Salmonella from a supplier’s ingredient.

The products are listed in Class 1, the highest risk level.

Production of the candy has been halted while the FDA and the company continue their investigation into the cause of the problem.

The recalled items were sold nationwide at Walmart, HyVee, Target and Dollar General.

They were also sent to distributors in Alabama, California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

The products come in various retail packaging such as bags, pouches and containers.

No illnesses have been reported so far in connection with this recall.

In healthy people, a salmonella infection can cause fever, diarrhea (possibly bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain, health experts say.

In rare cases, an infection with salmonella can cause the organism to enter the bloodstream and cause more serious illness.

Purchasers of Palmer Candy Co. white-coated candies and snacks are urged to return them to the point of purchase for a full refund of the purchase price.
