Dozens of cats found and removed from house in Elkhart

Dozens of cats found and removed from house in Elkhart

Several agencies, including the police and the animal protection association, have removed dozens of cats from a house in Elkhart

The search and seizure operation took place Thursday morning at the house on 18th Street in Elkhart.

Officials said they received the tip through a complaint to 311.

This prompted her to obtain an administrative inspection warrant signed by an Elkhart Superior Court clerk.

When officers arrived, the homeowner was not home. The conditions they found forced them to enter the home.

According to official reports, more than 30 cats were kidnapped from this small house.

However, the exact number of animals removed has yet to be confirmed and will be determined later by the Elkhart County Humane Society.

Where exactly the cats are taken and under what conditions they live there is still unclear.

In addition to the Elkhart Police and Fire Department, the Elkhart Building Department, the Indiana Department of Adult Protective Services and a social worker arrived at the home.

“This came to our attention through a 311 complaint, so if people have concerns, we’d be happy for them to bring it to the attention of the city or police so that the matter can be investigated. As I said, we have a 311 app that people can use to raise those concerns,” said Jessica McBrier of the Elkhart Police Department’s press office.

It is unclear whether charges will be brought against the homeowner.

The officers plan to investigate the case at a later date because the person who lives here was not at home.
